Shop Owner Fined

A shop owner has been fined for offering for sale and selling dangerous electrical equipment.

Mr Wilkinson, the owner, was prosecuted by the local County Council and pleaded guilty to nine offences of contravening safety regulations after trading standards officers discovered dangerous electrical equipment being sold at The Trading Post, Llanelli.

An expert who examined the items said: "that in certain circumstances they could have been quite dangerous".

Mr Wilkinson stated: "It was negligence on my part in not testing the appliances. I am not there all the time and when I employ someone to do a job I expect them to do it properly. My fault was in not looking at the items afterwards. My assistant manager and I have taken an electrical safety course to test these items ourselves. It is all done in-house now".

Mr Wilkinson was fined £1,500 and ordered to pay £1,200 costs.

Carmarthenshire County Council trading standards stated: "It is vital that all items of this nature are safe to use and this authority will continue to ensure that this is so." and added: "We will not hesitate to prosecute anyone who threatens public safety. "The department is extremely proactive and provides an excellent service for those who need it."
